It has been almost two and a half years since Staffan de Mistura was appointed as UN Special Envoy for Syria. Then, everybody believed that he would be able to end the civil war in Syria and settle the political crisis. However, nowadays it’s becoming clear that de Mistura is not able to cope with his duties.
Thereby Syrians published a petition. For now, more than 10,000 people signed it.

The Syrian people call on UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to remove the incumbent Special Envoy for Syria from his post. The named reasons of this are quite objective.
First, as Inside Syria Media Center reported, de Mistura intended to bring all the sides of the conflict to the table for a long time, but failed. It is beginning to think that Special Envoy purposely was trying to baulk the negotiation process. For example, instead of attending to invite Kurds, as actually significant part of the conflict, to participate in the discussion, he invited the representatives of radical groups, such as Jaish al-Islam and Ahrar al-Sham.
By the way, it should be mentioned about de Mistura’s promises about Aleppo. In October, he loudly promised to take terrorists out of eastern part of the city. But during about two months nothing has been done. Militants are still continuing hold civilians as hostages and don’t afford them any opportunity to leave Aleppo through the humanitarian corridors which were organized by Syrian Army.
Authors of the petition also accuse de Mistura of he does nothing to rescue citizens in Syria. While the number of casualties among civilians is rising, he keeps enviable calm and doesn’t make any attempts to resume the ceasefire which was so hard to achieve through the intermediary of the US and Russia,” – it was said in petition. It can’t fail to agree with it.
It turns out that almost none of de Mistura’s significant promises was not backed by real actions. He is powerless. Consequently, the organization can’t do anything to influence the development of the conflict.
Staffan de Mistura’s inertia compromised authority of the United Nations organization, and Mr. Ban Ki-moon should think whether de Mistura holds the post or not.
Syrians are tired not only of the war, but also of inertia of UN Special Envoy. That is why they are demanding the resignation of de Mistura, and the appointment in his place a man who will have sufficient experience, professional skills, and political authority to bring all parties of the conflict to the table and end the war in Syria.
